Ear Pain (Otalgia): When to Worry and What to Do in Cagliari
Ear pain, or otalgia, is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. It may appear suddenly, for example after a bath or a cold, or gradually and last for several days. Learn the causes, symptoms, and how to get a specialist evaluation in Cagliari.
What is Otalgia?
Otalgia is the medical term for pain located in the ear. The pain can be sharp, throbbing, stabbing, or accompanied by burning, itching, ringing, or a blocked ear sensation. Sometimes it may also include fever or temporary hearing reduction.
Why Does the Ear Hurt?
The causes of otalgia can vary. Sometimes the pain originates directly from the ear, but other times it is referred, coming from nearby areas such as the throat, teeth, or jaw.
Direct Causes (Primary Otalgia)
- Cerumen (earwax) buildup: very common and easily removed in the clinic
- External or middle ear infections: bacterial or viral infections that require targeted treatment
- Ear canal eczema or irritation
- Fungal infections (otomycosis): often associated with intense itching
- Perforated eardrum: causing sharp pain and possible fluid discharge
Referred Causes (Secondary Otalgia)
- Dental problems: cavities, infections, or recent extractions
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
- Tonsillitis or pharyngitis
- Inflammation of salivary glands or throat
When to See a Specialist
If ear pain persists for more than one or two days, or is associated with fever, hearing loss, discharge, or dizziness, it is important to see an otolaryngologist promptly.
During the ORL visit, the specialist uses instruments such as an otoscope and audiometer to examine the ear canal, eardrum, and hearing function, accurately identifying the cause of the problem.
What Not to Do for Ear Pain
Many people try to “fix it themselves,” but some home remedies can make things worse. It is better to avoid:
- Water irrigations or syringes
- Cotton swabs or pins
- Cone-shaped ear cleaners
- Oils or drops without medical advice
These behaviors can push earwax deeper, irritate the skin, or perforate the eardrum.
How Otalgia is Treated
Treatment depends on the cause identified by the doctor:
- Cerumen buildup: removal in the clinic, quick and painless
- Ear infection: antibiotic or antifungal therapy, with periodic check-ups
- More complex conditions: further diagnostic tests (CT scan, MRI) and, if necessary, targeted surgical intervention
While waiting for the visit, pain can be temporarily relieved with oral painkillers or ear drops, always under medical or pharmacist advice.
